Understanding the Lynchburg City Budget

The City of Lynchburg has a roughly $575 million dollar annual budget, which covers the City’s fiscal year (July 1 to June 30th).

Each year, from February - May, the City Manager’s Office and City Council work together to create the budget for the following year. The City maintains an excellent page dedicated to the budget here.

There are multiple ways for citizens to get involved, including:

  • Attending “budget and brews” sessions in April to hear about the proposed budget

  • Attending the public hearing, scheduled in mid-April, where citizens get 3 minutes (and organizations get 5 minutes) to tell City Council what they want to see in the final budget

  • At any time of the year, citizens can speak at City Council meetings, or at School Board meetings (for the school buget) about their priorities, concerns and suggestions for spending.

FY 2025 Budget: What You Need to Know

After draconian property tax cuts pushed through by Republicans in 2023, we’re now facing shortfalls and cuts to important city services.

Left of Lynchburg held a budget briefing on April 10, 2024 to summarize the key facts and get you ready to attend (and maybe speak!) at the public hearing on April 16th.
